Injustice
By Alice Shapiro
I might assume you mean to say
I am lovely and dear
and once I would have been assured
of this.
Now you stare, blank and faraway
more salient thoughts beckon your attention.
I could ramble endlessly
about fantastic things
and you would simply nod
agreeably.
Open those eyes and look, look again!
I am here and waiting for your refrain.
Sing it, speak it low and indistinct
but gather muster just this once
allow my dried, outdated illusions
like a fashion faux pas not yet new and chic.
You give me pause.
I am not fond of this injustice.
Critique
By Julie Ellinger Hunt
At first read, this concise poem illustrates simple yet enjoyable poetic elements such as style and theme. I initially considered it to be simplistic overall … but as I went back and read it through again, the poem opened up like soft petals on a flower, revealing something quite special.
There is solace and grace, as the narrator walks us through the reality of being with one another after a bit of time. That newness is gone. That excitement. That thrill. She is standing firm and saying, “Look, I am still here!” as his attention focuses on things more exhilarating. I feel like this is so relatable and real. Anyone who has been in a marriage or long relationship can understand this raw emotion and want to smack him in the head and say, “Yo, Dumbass! Look at her!”

#####
Julie Ellinger Hunt lives in Northwest New Jersey. After completing her education at the University of Delaware, Hunt went on to publish her poetry in more than 20 journals internationally. Her off-beat, gritty style fused with sentiment and surreal observation is well received by the community. Her first book, Ever Changing (Publish America, 2010), was well regarded by fellow writers and happy readers. Her second book of poetry, In New Jersey, was just released by unbound CONTENT and it is rising up the Amazon charts with a fury. She hopes to continue to grow as a writer and contribute as much as possible while living under the same roof with her two sons and husband (she speculates they may be part alien). Keep up with her at http://jthunt.wordpress.com/.
